Canggu is one of the best places for surfing in Bali. Here are some things to know for first-timers. Be warned, Canggu is one of Bali’s busiest surf spots, especially in peak season.
There are quite a few surf spots along the Canggu coast, stretching across about 5 kilometers.
- Echo Beach is one of the most popular spots. It’s good for intermediate to expert-level surfers.
- Batu Bolong is a good place for beginners because it often has long, gentle waves.
- Pererenan offers hollow right breaks and is good for advanced to intermediate skills.
Wherever you go, be sure to accurately assess your own skill level and DO NOT get in over your head.
Be aware of the crowd conditions and make sure you follow all proper safety and etiquette to avoid bad situations.
Seasons
The best time to surf in Canggu is during the dry season, which lasts from April to October. Dry season offers the best conditions because of several weather factors, especially consistent light, offshore winds.
Surf Schools
Canggu has a bunch of surf schools. The quality of the school and teachers varies a lot. It’s usually best to ask for recent recommendations from former students because some schools tend to have high turn-over for teachers. Canggu Surf School is one of the most popular options.
Getting around
As with the rest of Bali, renting a scooter is the best way to get explore and get around in Canggu. Some scooters offer board racks.
Cars are definitely safer but scooters are easier.
Driving in Bali is extremely dangerous though, so DO NOT drive a motorcycle or scooter if you are not already an experienced rider. Regardless, always wear a good helmet and drive with a “safety-first” mentality, as best you can.
